It would be funny to band the original wheels so it still has that 180B centre, were you not tempted? I was slightly tempted as seen a few with 14" alloys and it didn't look too bad, on the down side i only have 3 original steels. When these wheels came up i actually bought them for 2 of the tyres for the mrs car, because it was cheaper than 2 decent brand partworns on ebay. Then i clicked and the guy i got them from (stringer fabrications) done the banding, i sold the other alloys and paid for them to be done. I do want to sort out some alloys for it but for now i have done what i can afford in the hope that i get my money back when it comes time to sell them on. Also theres a lot of cars out there that use quite wide 15 inch wheels so getting a 205 width is pretty cheap compared to other sizes.

rear corner - nearly there DONE rear valance - few plugs welds DONE boot opening - think theres 2 small repairs to do DONE drivers arch and repairs to inner passengers arch and repairs to innerDONE passengers sill - repair to front edge DONE passengers floor - small repair to leading edge DONE front wings - repairs and gapping CLOSER front panel - repairs to both edges CLOSER doors and bonnet - few localised repairs windscreen and roof - not looking forward to these DONE Filler - splodge here and there Repairs to rear side window frames NEARLY DONE Few bits off the list and a few bits closer to being done. Heres a few pictures of the screen repairs, this has all been finished off tidied up painted and had the screen refitted. Then keeping with the passengers side I attacked the wing and front panel Got the second bit welded into front edge. Then welded up the sill so I could sort out the rear edge Tried the wing back on Tacked the inner bit on whilst on the car, removed reshaped the middle then welded up

Attacked the rear arch, which is the main bit holding me back from MOTing, apart from a few mechanical bits. Then reshaped the rear quarter panel i made a while back, i did do the curve using quite a lot of guess work so not too bad. This is where my camera battery got a bit low and i couldn't find the charger. So theres a few pictures of bits that will not be seen again and i'll put some more up with the end result. Rear edge of sill into arch has seen better days and had a patch on inner arch. Chopped all the grot out Made this out of the left overs of passengers sill i got from datman I made the other 2 bits for the repair and welded them in. Small repair got welded in above the sill section i made and all done around the arch!

Well done. I'd be interested to hear what sort of hours this has taken when it's done.

So had some fun with a can of lynx today, in between taking another car for MOT, Repairs, Retest and VIC check. (please excuse the amount of colours im trying to keep it protected and use up all the odd aerosols i have) The wheels are 7.5 wide compared to the 8 wide alloys from before and i wanted to keep a similar amount of stretch. Luckily the wheels had some 185's on them, so i could have a tester. I just need to get some decent ones and some 205 or 215's for the rear. **Top tip if you go to the lengths of blowing your tyres on, your better off with less propellant and working up rather than too much to start off with **

You starting as you mean to go on - ie with snow /cold weather tyres I see? Like the offset - what are the rims off?

I bought the wheels with tyres, i managed to pass it off with swmbo because her car needed 2 tyres and there was a pretty good pair of right sized firestones on them, leaving me with a pair of sava m+s to play about with, i'm pretty happy with the sizes, could go up to a 195 width. I will get a new set of tyres once sizes are decided.
The rims are off a primera, most pre 2002 are 4x114.3 PCD then had 1.5 inch band added to fronts and 2.5 added to rears.

That will build up your arm muscles nicely. On my own 910 (which has a rack unlike I think yours) I fitted 185/70x14's (to keep it about original & not lower the gearing) - and steering is heavy to park as well as being 4½ turns lock-lock. So its never going to be a car my wife borrows or an autotest car. As an aside - most cars seem to look better with big wheels on, but I reckon many may drive better with skinny tyres. In awe of all of the effort and good work that you are doing to resurrect this car by the way. And you even find time to write up for the forum too. Keep it up.

Mines a steering box.
The tyres that were fitted on the s12 alloys were 195's and it hasn't been noticeably difficult to turn, i have only gone off the drive to turn round and put it back on again 4 or 5 times. So most of it has been low speed steering. I don't know how many turns lock to lock it is.
I'm pretty sure it will be fine, although i could upgrade to a power steering box or fit up a rack but that can wait until i decide if i want to swap in a diesel lump, im pretty tempted atm to stick a modern common rail diesel in it as this will be my daily transport.

I wondered about fitting a Primera 2.2 diesel into a Datsun pickup, I expect it would be pretty difficult, and not just the wiring and fuel supply.

I'm currently eyeing up the 1.9 cdti isuzu lump, they seem to manage high 40's mpg in vectra estates. Wiring (considering its a modern car) seems pretty easy as they are designed to fit quite a range of vehicles. The use the same basic block as the old isuzu motors that get converted to RWD quite a lot.

yeh go diesel! ;D
i was going to convert mine to power steering. i've still got the power steering box out of the laurel which i was going to use.
i'm not sure yet, but i think i will convert the laurel back to box as i'm not happy with the turning circle i've got with the rack.

Its about time i updated this, i've got 10 days off work to have a bit of a play with it now.
After a visit from alramone i've got a lot of my enthusiasm back. So time to get it on the road i think.
First issue was one i had forgotten about, most of the seat mounting bolt have at some point been cross threaded or had the wrong pitch bolts forced in them. Chopped the nuts out on both the rear ones, made a replacement section out of 2mm steel and welded a m10 nut on the back, then moved onto the front, on this i got my spot weld cutter out and removed the crossmember (this was a total ballache so i'll just chop it on the other side), fitted new nuts mounted on bit of 3mm plate and welded it back in. Pictures to follow!!
