Woke up this morning to find someone has tried to take away my Dat. Popped the drivers door glass and broke away the steering cowl. nothing else seems to be missing. Can't see why someone would put a window through when the locks on these are crap??? my bedroom over looks the car and despite hearing noises most nights (including last night), and peering out to see if anyone's messing with my car, I'm surprised I didn't catch them, I am after a drivers door glass urgently as I have nowhere I can store this behind lock and key. I have posted on the wanted thread  Fortunately this car is not finished yet, It has been undergoing a partial mechanical restoration and some of the electrics and essentials like gearstick and clutch cable are currently not fitted yet, hence why it is still parked outside my house.   |

pretty sure Will Datman will have the glass.
hopefully other people reading this will wake up and realise that our old cars need security and can't be left out and be safe. they're just too easy to steal, for whatever reason someone would want to take them.

You're right al, I'm already quite paranoid of leaving this anywhere and it's usually on my drive (security light), not that that's much of a deterant. I have plans for security but it hasn't been running for a few months now and I wanted to get it on the road before I could take it to a security specialist. (Thatcham cat1 and central locking planned).
Datman will probably have the glass, I know, but I seem to have problems dealing with Will. Shame because we used to get on fine.
Fortunately I haven't finished fitting all the parts, there was no battery, earth wiring, gear stick, clutch cable or throttle linkage, also no coolant in her yet either otherwise it would not still be in my possession.

It looks the kind of car that a thief could have "fun" in. It would appear that the one brain-cell was not in gear when they broke in and tried to hot-wire it; seeing as it could, obviously, NOT be driven.
I posted an article here or on DATMAN site with some advice on how to deter such thieves. I'll see if I can find it (I am a retired Police Crime Prevention Officer) and link/post it again but, in short, inside is better than outside and in either case a VISIBLE deterrent is advised, whether you have Trackers or immobilisers fitted (Yes, they do lift and drag....) as most thieves are opportunists and seeing a Krooklock, wheel surround, gearstick lock etc. will make them go look elsewhere for an easier option.
That said..... we always have the wild-card two-brain-cell thief.
Recall that 30psi (Martin) had an attempt at his Bluebird and it was saved by the choke cable! The two-brain cell-thief (subsequently detained - well done, Martin) didn't know how to operate a choke and couldn't get it started.
If anyone wants some advice, pm me and I will respond.

Sorry to hear of the attempted theft, but at least you still have the car. After mine nearly got nicked, I got it garaged with a disklok.
The amount of effort a thief will go to is down to their motives. If they just want to have fun and have a go, chances are they will just do what happened to your car and not much more. Perhaps they'll move to the next car if they can see deterrents and leave yours alone. If their motives are to definitely have the car away, they'll probably just lift it.
I drive mine everyday, but I'd not leave mine out anywhere at night or for any length of time. It makes it incovenient though so chances are I'll sell up and buy a normal car.

Good points, I have a bmw I drive daily at the moment as the insurance on the dat is cheap being a second car on a classic policy. I would garage it but I have a motorbike in the garage, i.e. no room. I don't think a risk of theft would make me sell it but maybe not use it as much. If I can get it garaged, I will.
it usually lives on my drive but as I have been working on it a lot lately it was parked down the side of the house when it was broken into.

Its bad news, always your worst nightmare, hope you fit the glass soon and sorted out. The rain can't help much. A friend of mine who works close to you sent me a snap of your car, but I didn't want to post it because the background location is quite distinctive if you know the area. You can't be too careful. Security is a major issue on most pre-90's cars, I reckon I could kick the door open on my late 80's Golf. If you park your car in garage then it's fine, but if you can't, then invest in a good quality car cover.

I'm sorry to hear that. Shame that people do this. In Finland we dont have such problems that much. In my hometown I can just leave my car outside running while I do shopping without any worry of a theft  . It's just that in Finland robbing a car isn't really all that profitable so it's not really worth it. Btw beware of the BMW. In some older BWM's you could kick the driver's door and all the doors locks would open. I remember my friend trying this with his and it worked. Also works on some old Volvo 240's. |

the difference is the BMW is replaceable (i'm guessing it's a normal modern one?) where as any Datsun is rare now and may be irreplaceable , let alone the effort the owners have put into looking after and fixing them.

Thieves can be quite "clever" at times. 
One version of the VW Golf could be opened by placing half a tennis ball over the lock and quickly squashing the ball so that it operated the vacuum central locking. 
I also recall the early Escorts being stolen by shorting across the indicator bulbs and thereby disabling the immobiliser (the lights flashed when the immobiliser was set and they were connected in the same circuit - Ford changed this set-up very quickly). 
Thankfully, not many Radio/cassette/CD players got stolen after they became a standard fitting. However, I do recall meeting a guy (when I was still a Policeman) in the street who had a very nice expensive Mercedes that had the dashboard literally ripped open to steal the unit. Sad but true. It was his fault for parking up to go and see Arsenal FC and leaving his car in Hackney, E.London. 
Ahhhhh..... those were the days!

You are right Al, I just pointed out that BMW's etc. aren't that much harder to steal compared to older japanese cars. In Finland people just dont steal cars that much and even less older Japanese cars.

The bimmer is an e30 so quite old , will be up for sale now the 120 is running. I have replaced the glass and steering column cowl, also managed to find a new dash top panel whilst I was at it, much better condition than mine, looking quite smart now. Had the car running today for the first time in quite a few months, sounds ace with the big carb ;D |

Sorry to here of this. My dads friend owned a light green 910 from new and drove it as a daily in London. His only security was to remove the HT lead from the coil. After all these years she was stolen a few months back and never seen again. On a positive note I no it's bad what you've gone through but atleast you still have her. Makes me wonder what the guy went through in Bournemouth when the 810 SSS got stolen then raced

I used to own PME 963R - I had to replace the column shroud because some imbecile tried to steal it back in 2004 from the owner before me..
It also needed repairs to the OS inner wing trumpet / wing and I did some undersealing and waxoyling to the sills and door bottoms etc. - apart from that it was pretty sound.
I couldn't keep her but thought I was doing my bit to preserve a low mileage car...
The new owner was initially very enthusiastic.. then I saw the car on ebay abandoned in a garden with a burnt out clutch a few years later!. But this cars suffering did not end there....
Why oh why spend a fortune on silly wheels before sorting out the boring stuff like the rust and flaking paint..and why fit them in the first place attracting the attention of local divs if you don't have a garage!.

- In my view there are very few 'good owners' left now - too many heartless banger drivers/exporters or boy racers wanting to turn them into a playtoy until they get bored then scrap the newly ruined car. Rant over!. I know this will upset some people but a few will agree with me ....
