Personally I think an SR20DE would be a good compromise. That'll make the light weight sunny quick enough. Once you've got that out of the way then you can later install an SR20DET if you become power hungry. Ca18det's are relatively cheap, 500/600 whereas sr20's are about a grand aren't they? A CA18DET will be more expensive in the long run after you've had to get a new turbo for it. You'll be lucky if the turbo is fine, but chances are it will give up. The SR20DE in my 910 was £400 with the gearbox. AN SR20DET will be about a grand but again you might need to spend £500 on a turbo. It all depends what you want and how much your budget is. If you want a 200+bhp Sunny then it will cost you more than wanting a 150bhp Sunny. The higher the power, the chances of things going wrong will also go up.

I know getting a lot of power from an l series is going to cost quite alot, but what do we think it would cost for the base conversion. My funds have depleted and im curios whats the cheapest option as i have a a12 in at the minute with a 4 speed and its way to sluggish for me

easiest option, and the cheapest as it involves the least amount of conversion parts is a larger A series engine. A14 or A15. so just the cost of the engine plus everything else that goes with it. oils, filters, gaskets etc. so £500? maybe cheaper. just depends on finding an engine.
for the L series. dunno. not sure anyone has done it over here? but as i said before. you'd prob be best off using parts from an A10, such as gearbox and poss propshaft. otherwise an auto propshaft.
you'd also need to sort out an exhaust system. again, maybe A10 parts could be used?
so i guess you'd need
engine gearbox prop exhaust service parts
so whatever you can get that lot for. £700? if you can find em. plus all the other brake and axle parts. or not.

Bear in mind that if you want a 5 speed gearbox, the neither the A nor the L (dogleg) boxes are cheap. This all adds up and so whilst you may be able to pick up a running A14 for say £300 , budget at least double for a compatible 5 spd box.

If you want boost you will definitely have to look into rear axle swaps. Il be using a salisbury rear axle which can cope with the power Im hoping to produce. I have an h165 from an a10 sss and a Sunny auto prop sitting in my garage which will help you if you decide to keep your power goals at 200bhp or less. You dont have to go for 280zx legs if you don't want to, there are options for your stock struts as far as cheap brake upgrades are concerned.

Is the Salisbury a complete axel or is it a salisbury kit that you've fitted in your stock casing? As far as im aware the car currently has a h150 I believe, whats the benefit of the h165? Thanks

The Salisbury axle is a complete axle from a Scimitar GTE. Its very big, quite heavy but very very strong. Your 150 wont last very long with big power increases but the 165 will bolt straight in has been proven to last in cars running 200ish hp and torque. As long as you dont do mad hard launches everwhere with mega sticky rubber it should be upto the job. Remember its all bolt in as well. Putting an axle into your car that wasnt designed to be there costs lots of money.

To continue on the axle theme, we have fitted an Alfa Romeo giuila 105eZF LSD. It's the right width, we removed all the brackets, did the same to the B310 axle and the re fitted them to Alfa axle.

Dom90, you're in Dartford. I am in Woolwich. We are both contemplating putting modern Nissan engines into old Datsuns. Maybe there's an opportunity for a labour exchange and experience swapping. Mine is SR20DE into a Datsun 510.
Send me a PM, I'm sure it can't be that difficult if other people have done it, and if you need help we can help each other out.
