Yippee - well done. So Will was right ehh? We told you how clever and intuitive he is! Just seen your post elsewhere about selling - ignore my plea for root cause explained above. Ed

finally got it done, after 8 carbs strips, numourous hours trawling the net, hours in my garage, i think ive finally sussed it, it appears there was a blockage between the port where the second ball bearing goes and the spray hole itself, or it could have been the spray bar thingy that sits down the top of the carb with lots of little holes in it, cleaned these both out today and hey presto its running like a dream, thank bloody god, now i can start to actually enjoy the car

What was causing the blockage? Was it something that the fuel filter should have prevented or just a build up of grot over time? Did you take any snaps that could show which bit you're talking about? Sorry about firing the questions at you, it's just that it might help other in the future. Congratulations, by the way.

i should have taken some pics but didnt, there was like a sort of carbon build up on the spray thing with lots of holes (sorry dont know what its called)i wiped it clean and forced carb cleaner through it, one thing i did learn was most of the gaskets/accelerator pump washers etc are the same as the hitachi dch 340 carb, might be worth noting because i couldnt actually get a gasket kit for the nikki carb but the hitachi kit was fairly easy to source as apposed to the nikki kit which was near on immpossible to get
