Hi, Background: I have a 1984 Stanza which is being used for historic road rallies. The standard struts were rebuilt/uprated by GasShocks, and the springs are 50% uprated; this work was carried out by the previous owner. The steering is VERY stiff and the car particularly heavy to steer when parking. With the front jacked up it's clear that the springs are jumping out of their seats, and the steering not as smooth as it should be. I've been in touch with GasShocks (very helpful) and they suggested that the strut top bearing could be seized, and I tend to agree. According to the workshop manual there does not seem to be a traditional bearing, but what could be a thrust washer 54329 and dust seal 54059. Has anyone experienced a similar problem, and other than stripping down the strut and applying grease as recommended in the workshop manual could there be another fix? Thanks, Ian

Interested to hear more on this, as indeed the steering on my Datsun (the 910 Bluebird estate)is not only weighty but also about 4 turns lock to lock. Can only suggest that you try Datman or Leigh in case they have advice or new top mounts, or a shock absorber reconditioner in case they can supply better top mount bearings. Not sure what my question is ...... but is this why many rally cars (eg Escorts) have roller top mounts? Another wild thought is to try a 240Z place - as they often have loads of cash put into them and competition etc parts are made for them - and there is the very slim chance (indeed) that they have the answer. Failing all of this then its down to you to improve your arm muscles and /or blow the front tyres up by a few pounds. Ed

Hi Ed. We have met - Throckmorton 2016 I believe, I was navigating in a white 911. The outcome was an undersized (smaller diameter updated) spring which wasn't sitting correctly in either of the spring seats, the upper being rubber. Nothing can be done about the lower one, but we adapted the upper seat to make it better. Second time out last weekend resulted in 16th o/a on the Tour of Cheshire. Now to get the CV joints replaced and try to locate a spare electronic distributor! See you around. Cheers - Ian
