looking at the cars around it, it doesn't look like the datsun lasted any less then it's rivals?
Mk3 Cortinas, Mk1 Escort, HC Viva all same age...

Indeed, the Escort lasted 11yrs same as the Laurel. 10yrs seems to be about average, and I'd say that was true of most stuff from the '70s. I remember some very grotty Mk3 Cortinas, Vivas etc in the '80s.

looking at the cars around it, it doesn't look like the datsun lasted any less then it's rivals? Mk3 Cortinas, Mk1 Escort, HC Viva all same age... Up here all cars rusted badly, at least until paints and rustproofing improved in the 1980's. I certainly remember 2 year old Escort (early MkI) vans with holes in wing tops (possibly they had factory primer only underneath), and crusted seam caps /strips on Mini's when only 3 or 4 year old. However Fiats, Lancias (etc) & Datsuns were probably the worst - with horror stories of dealers doing rot repairs on brand new Fiats in 1960's & 70's, and certainly of sills being put on 3 year old Bluebirds. What all this did do is to develop a healthy aftermarket underseal business - like Ziebart, Endrust, Cadulac etc. Even now I am pleasantly surprised when I travel south & see a 90's Clio or Rover 25 etc without rusty rear wheel arches. So lets look after our rare old cars that have survived all of this, and make sure they do not end up on the heap because of rot that can be prevented. Maybe £50 spent now on cavity wax can prevent future weldathons. Ed

That P130 (?) 2000-6 estate in Norfolk might be the one that got banger raced at Swaffham in 1999?

Great shots! Celica in the top one too.
Datsun in the bottom photo (B310?) looks to have been driven in France judging by the yellow headlights. I remember painting the lights on my B11 Sunny for my first trip there in '93, never bothered since and they don't even have it on their own cars nowadays.

I was doing photography back then too, was at that meeting snapping from the infield, helped fund the petrol for a poor student. I got let down by my first Nissan a week after that meeting, E-reg Sunny 5 door 1.6 8v, head gasket went. Repaired and flogged on, next car was a Ford Sierra twin cam that lasted for years, took me until I started racing FWD bluebirds to like Nissan again!
