dunno what size miine is but it's about a 75cm long and about the same hight including the pump etc. cost around £200 i think?
i'd go bigger if i brought another....

bought mine from shiremoor compressors in 94. it has a 200 litre tank. Get the biggest CFM you can possibly afford. i think 14 or 15 is about the best you can get from single phase mains. You can always add more air capacity later by just plumbing in an extra tank if you need it but its all about the pump CFMs .

I got my current one from Shiremoor about 3 years ago. So far it's been good apart from I initially placed it under my workbench where my old one was. I think this made it to run too hot and caused the head gasket to fail. Shiremoor sent me a new gasket set for free next day and it's been fine ever since. Their service is excellent IMO It's now housed in it's own sound proofed, vented enclosure outside my workshop. It's a 3hp with a 200L tank and 16cfm. Not cheap at over £600 but it's as big as you can get in single phase and it's up to running an air fed mask whilst painting ok so I think it's about as good as any competent DIYer would need. I wouldn't want one ay smaller though.

Ricky. I think you need to give us more of an idea as to what you want to use this for and what you'd expect from it.

Well it's mainly for the hard bolts, removing wheels, spray gun, bodywork so grinder cutting tools

Does it make a difference if oil free? eg does any oil get into the outlet air and affect paint etc? Just a couple of observations about the replies: - Good to hear 2 reports of Shiremoor Compressors. They are a long established local small business - been there. - Wolf compressors are also rebadged and sold (sometimes) by Aldi. Maybe much more DIY type stuff (ie for me). Also available from www.ukhs.tv/ - I have bought a few things from them that arrived very quickly. - watch the connectors - not an expert on this - but Wolf (& Aldi) use Euro quick connectors that are quite rare elsewhere, but work OK. I bought a basic air compressor from Aldi - primarily for rust proofing my Datsun. However it is invaluable for all sorts of other things. Ed

I'd avoid the East Grinstead branch of Aldi as a member of staff there damaged one of my cars!

Ed Hi Ed, On the old one i had a inline filter this stops water and oil droplets from getting into your paint which helps alot, thanks for the links im just confussed. The other thing is i have to wait for the bill from Will about parts before deciding which compressor to buy or whats left in the budget for this project.

I just pulled the "big 'un" out of storage and put it in my garage for when i do some paint work. Its a mash up of parts that were given to me or lying around, its a heck of a lot better than the "airmaster tiger" thing it replaced that struggled to turn over from new. Its pretty quiet and keeps up with everything that i do, also with the size of tank i can fill the tank up and turn it off and spray 3 coats of primer on something wing sized without having to restart it (handy for late nights or after work). I know the motor is 3 hp but the pump is unknown. The filter is pretty good but i also have a Devilbiss Whirlwind filter that goes on the bottom of a spraygun along with a mini regulator Getting it back in working order reminds me i must make up a guard for the belt!
