How does the sniffer tool work?
What if you renewed the head gasket and thought you'd cured the problem, then used the tool again. Presumably there would still be some carbon in your cooling system left over from when the problem was there would you not?

i'm not sure how it works. you just put some special liquid in this tube thing. remove the rad cap and put the tube over the hole.
run the engine and if there's carbon, then the liquid changes colour.
you do have to make sure the water level is a little low, or else water/antifreeze gets into the tester liquid and ruins the results.

Well, after my broken foot, followed by Christmas expense, the A10 is going in for the head gasket tomorrow. It's only been out-of-action since the beginning of October . I'll get the head checked for warping, as well. Incidentally, last month's Practical Classics (staff car sagas) also had the same problem with one of their cars. Same signs and symptons. Well, all sorted now, it appears ;D However, no obvious sign of head gasket failure BUT car now starts without spluttering to clear water from No.4 bore (which showed clear signs of "steam cleaning".....) Head checked without any issues; fingers crossed it's not a cracked head.... now I just need a few shows to go to!!! Leigh (Area rep)

i'd have thought the gasket itself would have been the failure point.
good to hear it's sorted though. you going to get over to the goodwood meet?
