my old 120y. brought back in march 2008. saw an advert in local supermarket advertising board for not much money. remembering my gran's old 2 door which i thought was a great looking car, i had to go see this one. never seen a coupe before, infact, since my grans old Datsun, i only remember seeing a couple after that. Anyways, went to see it and found it to be in very good condition. it has been garage stored for 15+years and had only come out very recently. The original owner died and the car was just left in the garage. fast forward to 2007 and the car was dug out and sold to the girl who had the car up for sale due to be a student and not needing a car. So, deal was done and this was now mine my first Datsun. tore the carpets etc out to check it out and lube it up looks good so far so gonna fill it up with wax oil stuff while i've been waiting for my new wheels i've been geting the body ready for paint, also thought the front was lacking something so after i had a play with an old hacked up mk1 golf spoiler i brought a brand new one off fleebay £30 delivered. not orignal vw, but as it's not going on a vw i think it will do fine  i think it suit's the styling, just wonder how long it'll last once i lower it some more

swapped over the front struts. now sitting on 280zx struts with 2 1/4" coil over, adjustable height suspension. mmmm.pics! first off i wanted to give it some negative camber. i didn't like the idea of slotting my inner wing/strut topsmounts, so i modifyed a second pair of strut top bearings. old b210 leg and new shinny zx leg. zx leg is 40-50mm shorter then the b210 so i can go lower without it bottoming out on the bump stop one side in have bleed the brakes and they feel a bit spongy, may just be down to the larger caliper size. i'll take it for a drive and see how it goes, will bleed em again too. also gotta get car to settle so i can set up the height. later found out that a larger bore mastercylinder was needed to work with the 280zx struts came from a 180b i think? i had to swap out the wheel studs. the zx ones are a fair bit shorter than the 120y's. the one on left is zx, one on right is 120y. straight swap also i fitted my modifed lower arms, 10mm longer. not sure how much difference it's made to the camber yet as it needs to settle and set up the tracking. i'll let you know.

did a bit of winter proofing, removed both front wings to make sure no nasties were gonna grow in the winter salty wet roads. found a little hole in the left inner wing where three layers meet, cut it out and welded in some new steel. scraped off all the old crud and zinc primered it, two pac painted it and undersealed everthing else. also got holes in the front valance and outer wing on left side, where the two overlap and bolt together. i'll fix them during the week. my girlfriend done most the hard work scraping and painting and ruined her jeans so guess i gotta take her shopping

i decided to swap in a 1800cc mazda mx5 engine and gearbox to give me a decent power increase with decent economy and reliabilty. engine is fitted just need to plumb it all in and make propshaft and exhaust to fit as well as all the wiring and fuel lines etc. sump has had some surgery to clear the steering linkage  couple more pics showing the engine mounts welded to the chassis and the orignal crossmember mounts removed. also note the brake master cylinder. came from the usa left hand drive but still has bleed nipples on same side as uk cars. and a pic of the engine and my cramped garage, note the gearbox is very very long.had to move the handbrake back around 100mm, so was glad to find that was very easy to do. engine is fitted. now the hard work starts. but some pics for now not the best looking engine it has to be said  loadsa room nice sturdy mounts, well will be when they're done up

been going through the wiring for the mazda engine, can't belive just how many sensors and junk are needed just to put fuel in and make it spark  still i'm getting closer oh and i'm also mixing datsun and mazda dials etc so hopefully once it's done the dash will all work but still look datsun

been driving this as a daily for the last few weeks and is going well. had a problem with to low a fuel pressure, so was running lean, but fixed that with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. the problem was because the ecu i'm using is off a different car that has a returnless fuel system which has a regulator in the fuel tank and my engine has the older normal system with the reg on the fuel rail. the returnless system runs at a constant, higher pressure. i have an innovate wide band o2 sensor fitted so i know exactly what my fuel ratio is and can adjust the fuel reg till it's right, then the ecu does the rest. i highly recommend the innovate gear if your into tuning yourself. anyways, the car goes well. prob the right sort of power for the b210 (150bhp) with it's dated suspension. i have anti tramp bars fitted to the cart sprung rear axle, it needed them with the 1400 a series... but if i do feel like upping the power there are plenty of people fitting forced induction to the mx5...... i then had the genius idea of taking a friend out in it today. while we were out decided to have a go at a 0-60 time. so with stopwatch in hand gave it a go.. 7.1sec. not bad but we'll try again.. bang. diff broke, as expected really, still, now i can at last fit the higher ratio one in it. also while it's in the garage. again. i'm swapping in my newly made lower arms and tie rods. means i can set the camber and caster easily, without stripping anything 8)

diff out. lots of missing teeth. planet gears broke. so fitted a diff from a b310 150y coupe. this is a higher ratio diff but no bigger and no lsd. then sold the car.
