I've just taken the distributor off my 1979 Cherry F-II (F10) to strip, clean and regrease it and fit an electronic ignition module. The exploded diagram in the Haynes manual shows two springs on the governor weights. My distributor has mounting points for two springs but only one fitted ! It is quite a stiff spring and both weights do return inwards (I assume they are linked together as they seem to move together). This raises two questions - am I missing a spring and how stiff should the spring(s) be ? Should the spring be quite stiff so as to resist the movement of the weights outwards until the rpm rises quite high and overcomes it or should the spring be quite low tension so that the weights can move out easily but strong enough to pull them back into the centre quickly when the rpm drops down again. Is the tension of spring important (if it influences the rpm / ignition curve) or can I just try and find two springs that will fit?

the springs and weights are all specific and alter the advance curve.

I feared the springs might be specific to the engine but do know if there should be one or two ?

there's normally two weights with a spring for each in any dizzy. it seams very odd that one would have been removed though...? but that would be my thoughts.

I thought there probably should be two. I can only assume someone has taken it apart before and lost one or both and replaced them with a single stronger spring or something. I'm not sure what to replace the missing spring with though. As you say it will affect the advance curve and I've no idea what the spring tension should be for a Hitachi D413-67 or at what rpm the weights should be fully extended.

Ha ha, that would be a bit drastic. I don't suppose you know where I could get a couple of springs from though do you ? I've had a search around the internet but all the expansion springs I can find are either too long or the loops are too big. I've got a couple from a rep but they are too loose a fit over the mounting posts and I'm worried they'll just fly off. I haven't tried bending the loops yet to make them smaller.

I found someone in Brazil who has a repair kit for the A10 distributor which contains both springs. They are actually different sizes which I wasn't expecting. Hopefully in a month or less my distributor should be back as it should be again :-)

To answer my own question at the start of this thread - NO I'm not missing a spring; there *should* only be one. I've come by another D413-67 distributor from an E10 and this also only has one spring fitted therefore I have to conclude that my distributor was correct in the first place and the A10 engine distributor did only have a single spring (although there could be one on each of the two weights).
So there you go - one spring !

The exploded diagram in the Haynes manual shows two springs on the governor weights. Write to Haynes and complain!
