i didn't want to muddle up a new guys 720 build thread, or start another thread and i believe this is related to this topic.. So a guy posted this chart in a build thread showing how many 720s are in the UK.. i think I have 2 questions Could someone explain what SORN means?? I googled it but it shows me a SORN vehicle is a car that is OFF the road.. I ask because it seems like the number taken off the road would increase over time not decrease. Be nice as i'm not familiar with your taxes and such Also,, is the number 214 in 1995 the total imported at that time,, or just what was left,, at that time??

In simple terms.... SORN means "Statutory Off-Road Notification". As the keeper of a road vehicle, the law has been changed over the last few years so that when the vehicle's Insurance expires OR the Vehicle Excise Licence (VEL/Road tax) expires, the law requires the keeper to notify the authority that it has now been removed from the road. If the vehicle is then spotted "on the road" (by road camera or eagle-eyed enforcement officers)the keeper can/will be fined heavily. It was brought in to try to stop un-insured drivers. Just recently the authority did away with the need to display a VEL on the vehicle as, like Insurance, it is now on a database. Although cameras are now proliferating, this removal of the need to display a VEL means that a vehicle without Road Tax is LESS likely to be spotted by Police etc.
And just to illustrate even more nonsense.... If you fail to notify SORN, by just letting VEL/Insurance expire, you can be automatically fined. BUT, as with most ill-thought-out legislation, all you have to do is contest the fine by stating that you DID notify the Authority by post. By law it is down to the authority to "prove" that you didn't send in the postal notification... not for you to prove that you did.

The 214 figure for 1995 would be the number left by that time out of however many first came to here when new.
There could be the odd newer private import amongst that lot, and with some models like 240Z that could add quite a bit each year.
