L24 Strange noise (Read 143 times)

I'm getting a noise from my L24 on the over run or when the revs are falling after reving the engine. It sounds like its coming from the front of the engine, maybe no1 cylinder. Sounds like a chuffing/rattle. I removed the cylinder head thinking it was a damaged valve but nothing seems untoward. Could it be a blow by if a valve isn't closing properly? A chain tensioner has been suggested but do I need to remove the front cover to check this?

No, I checked that before removing the head. The noise is more mechanical than that though.

if i was there im sure i could suss it. unusual for engine to make a noise on overrun as everyhing under no load, but vaccum is highest of course. Engine twisting on mounts and something contacting something else?

The valves look ok. Im swayed towards chain tensioner. Guess I'll just have to take the chain off. On the over run the chain night become looser

Ok, so today I removed the front cover, chain and tensioner. The chain looks to be in good condition but it seems to have munched through the nylon tensioner to such an extent that it has started to gouge a groove in the steel base of the nylon part of the tensioner at its leading edge.

Also when I tried a trial reassembly of the chain and timing marks it would seem that the chain has stretched so that I should be using the no2 timing marks instead of the no1 ones on the camshaft sprocket.

Could the combination of these 2 have caused my strange noise? I hope so cos I can't find anything else wrong.
