I have heard that the rules concerning CATS have changed now and regardless of age if a car was originally fitted with a CAT then it must now have it fitted for the MoT ... anybody able to confirm this ?? ...

How would the tester know? I don't think it would be hard to establish if a car was originally fitted with a catalyst. I think all MoT centres info is now downloaded to there PC's .. (i may be wrong) .. telling them what spec the car should be .. ie, ABS, CAT etc Your not even allowed to have any dash light illuminating now.

I had a K-reg (1992?) Passat that needed a whole exhaust. I recall being offered then, probably about 10 years ago, the option of cat or non-cat exhaust. The price difference was amazing so I opted for the non-cat.

My best guess is that my BMW (1990) was supplied without a cat, but some did have a cat from new. I think it might have been an option. I don't see how an MOT tester could feasibly/reliably prove it either way. I don't see how this could be realistically enforceable...
