hi guys, am wamting more power from my laurel. its a 87 2.4 manual. was going to go for a transplant but cant afford an RB25de. looked into a few other engines but all are far to much work. don't want an SR. so was thinking is there a way to extract more power from the original engine. is the ecu re-progamable? was thinking decent air filter and six branch manifold into a decent free flow exhaust, any other ideas would be good. also don't fancy ditching the injection set up for carbs.

i very much doubt any bolt on tunning is going to make any real noticeable increase in power. unless the bolt on part is a turbo of course... actully thats prob gonna be the way to go if you stick with the orignal lump, i heard the C32 engine is not quite as strong as the older 240Z or 240K engines due to lighter internal parts, con rods etc. but give it a max 5psi of boost and with carefull control of ignition (fitting a boost retard device) and the fueling you should get close to a 30% increase in power. other then that. pull the 2.4 out and fit a 280zx lump.

From memory about 125-130bhp.
Not always easy to compare BHP figures however, due to different methods of measuring it over the years. I think it was rather more optimistic back in the '70s.
How easy or otherwise would a VG30E conversion be in a C32? Effectively you're just creating something Nissan made anyway, but I don't know if they use different manifolds, sump etc to 300C or 300ZX.
My 300C saloons always felt pretty lively, far more oomph than the 25-30BHP increase would suggest - I think it being a much more modern, free-revving engine helps.

Dont like the idea of the vg, ideally want more power from the original engine. I suppose a good service and some new injectors would help. Fancy the idea of a Volvo turbo, easy to get big power from, and just so happens I've got a 940 turbo. Will have to do some measuring. Just the electrics scare me to death, proper happy doing all the fabrication work actually getting the engine in, but have never been a fan of electrics and ecu's and that kind of witchcraft.

If you start with a 2.8 L series, you can go to 3 litres and 300bhp if you want - rather a lot of money though!
I have a C210 engine in mine because the original was knackered, but the C210 lump actually feels slower right through the rev range than I remember my old C32 being - although I have a much quicker daily now, which may be warping this impression.
Non-standard swaps into Nissan shells are often a struggle in the transmission tunnel area. I put a Ford 2.3 16v Scorpio engine and MT75 gearbox into a C32 shell (for banger racing), and had to cut the tunnel out right back to the gearstick to clear the MT75 box. Toyota and BMW swaps into Nissan shells for drifting often seem to involve hacking lumps out of the tunnel too.
I'm toying with various swaps, but I'm going to sort out the suspension and brakes first whilst I think about it.
