Ah, now I see Al where you got the idea for the "oil-cooler through the headlight" look. Leigh (Area rep)

haha yeh. the silly big oil coolers hanging out the front is a nod to the old japanese race cars that did run coolers out front.

In this country they would be likely to fall foul of Construction & Use regulations and type approval for crash impact tests. Imagine what damage those "things" (scoops, lances, ankle-crushers.... ?)would do to the human body. Also, again, the vehicle lighting regs are not being complied with. All in all, I would presume, an MOT failure over here, if used on the road.
A side thought; perhaps this is what the euro-commissions are trying to get rid of in relation to modified cars? Just a thought.

Ahh haa this is definitely my thing! I have been interested in this style for years and was the real reason I got into Retro Japanese cars in the first place! There are actually many variations of this theme with different ideas, styles and features for each! I can't remember all of them all but I'll try and add some photos later! (I have thousands inc rare ones ) The more subtle Shakotan styles are the inspiration for my cars, (mainly as that is about the limits of the law in the UK!!) ,and I have more ideas in the pipeline! However, IDE really want to build a mental one if I come across a suitable beat up base car . I'll be back later (when I'm not on my phone) with more pics

Right Im Back Heres a bit more of the History.......... As Al mentioned, "Bosozoku" originates from the motorcycle gangs of the 1950s and the word Bosozoku actually translates into "Violent Running Tribe." Often guys from these gangs ended up becoming part of the infamous Japanese Yakusa. Bosozoku biker gangs often terrorised the city streets, riding wrecklessly and causing lots of noise and disturbance for thrils. This then spirelled into fighting with rival gangs etc etc. In the late 60s and early 70s cars started to be used by the gangs, and, like the motorcycles previously, were often customised with bright paint, loud exhausts and race car inspired accessorys of the period. Since this time, the style of cars have been popular because of the rebelion thinking behind them, however, the gangs that were behind it at the start have pretty much dissapeared due to many new laws coming in in Japan. The custom bikes and cars now seen on Japans roads of this style are now really part of an ongoing "scene" keeping this style of vehicle alive just for the interest and fun value of them. The main styles within "Bosozoku" are: Shakotan Yanky style VIP style Kyusha style Grachan Shakotan: Shakotan literally means "low car" or "lowered Body" and is used mainly for indicating extremely lowered cars with front and rear spoilers and big/extended exhausts. The manga/anime series, Shakotan Boogie, features two brothers driving extremely lowered cars. One of them being a white Toyota Soarer Z10, hence the popularity of that particular car under Shakotan fans. This style is the mild variant of the Bosozoku style. Yanky Style: During the 70s and 80s in Osaka area the street fashion became to wear colourful Aloha shirts and pants and this caused the wearers being called Yankees. Most of the “bad boys” were wearing the Aloha fashion and hence the Bosozoku became equivalent to Yankee style. The writing of this style is officially with double ii, so Yankii. Also one of the cars in Shakotan Boogie was a blue (later on painted yellow) Nissan 240 S30Z with widened fenders and “Yanky Mate!”, probably same as the Yankii fashion, in big white letters on the hood. People who copied this styling started called it Yanky style. Basically it is the same style as Shakotan with the exception of the wide fenders but mostly people call the moderate styled cars Yanky style. VIP Style: VIP style is more or less a crossover between Shakotan and gang cars: extremely lowered luxury vehicles (lots of bling!) are filled up with as much novelties as possible and ride on big rims. Sometimes very close to Bosozoku style, however IMO the Bosozoku style is more or less the low budget version of VIP style. Also VIP style tends to use only newer cars while the Bosozoku style uses the older cars from the 70s till early 90s. Kyusha Style: Kyusha style literally means “Japanese old classic car” which in a lot of cases mean it is an old car modified with some (smaller) fender flares, lowered and nice rims under it. So it should not really be the same as Shakotan style. Grachan Style: Grachan or Garuchan comes from the 70s and 80s Grand Championships on Fuji Speedway. The Bosozoku used to have big meetings on the parking lots of these events, hence the name. These cars should also match the same bodyshape styling as the cars running on the circuits, with big wide fenders like used on the Super Silhouette styling. These are often the most mental of the Bosozoku cars!! Alongside the above "Boso" styles there is also: Vanning: Bosozoku and Anime inspired customisation of small to mid sized vans. Dekotora Trucks: Simular styling applied to large trucks. ALL I KNOW IS A F**KING LOVE ALL THESE THINGS....... THE JAPS ARE JUST AWESOMELY CRAZY

Great thread, thanks for posting.
Decided that the C32's current style is an advanced Euro-JDM hybrid of VIP and Rat!
