Well, I've now come to the conclusion that we are now NEVER going to see a rolling 30 years tax exemption for cars. Boris Johnson (London Mayor) has announced that, in the near future, cars that were previously exempt from the London Congestion Charge "LCC" (SMART cars, Hybrids, electrics and diesels(?)) are now to be included. Yes, hate to say "I told you so", but I did.
Let's face it, all these schemes NEED to make money (and the car owner is, and always will be, viewed by Local/National Governments as a cash-cow). The latest figures from LCC show that their revenue has gone down, so SUCCESS, yes? Less cars going inside the area with their horrible nasty engines causing pollution, oh yes, and congestion. WRONG! Less chargeable cars (because figures show that there are more of these non-chargeable cars going into the area)equals less money. So, they have achieved their aim but what the heck we still need the money.
And so it goes. Also, with Tax Exempt cars increasing all the time because of cleaner/leaner emissions you can bet that the government will soon move the goal-posts to counter the loss of revenue. My sneaking suspicion is that they will have to massively increase the fuel levy.
And so, finally, if we expect them, the Conservatives, to bring back their 30 year rolling tax exemption, you might as well P--- in the wind! It will never happen now because, guess what, it would lead to ...... a loss in revenue!
Rant over.

having a car tax exempt just becasue of it's age is a bit silly though isn't it?
but if the duty is paid on fuel, then if you do low miles, which i guess most classic car owners do, you pay less road tax. if you drive high mileages and thus use more fuel then you pay more. doesn't that just make more sence?

Nail on head Leigh .... when the goverment introduced the greener tax malarky they had no idea how massive it was going to get, and as you say they have lost a fortune in revenue because of it and are now looking at ways of clawing that lost revenue back so i also think that the rolling 30yrs tax thing will not happen, but im not bothered as i never thought it would anyway. I have read a few different articles lately that state they are looking into Pay As You Drive in the not too distant future and getting rid of the road tax, or to give it its proper name the Vehicle Excise Duty. Now that could be a good thing but also a bad, it means for guys like us who have a few cars we wont have to fork out for several road tax's and will only pay as we drive it and if you only do a few miles a year then your laughing. The downside is if the PAYD duties are alot per mile then it may work out worse than the current system, plus it was said that if it did go ahead then the new scheme would go out to private firms which is never a good thing in my veiw.
