Hi again I was lucky enough to acquire a lot of pukka Dexion metal racking /shelving that has been used in my garage for the past 27+ years. Its now dismantled in preparation for its removal to a new home in the South (where is tba). However it is now showing its age with muck, spillages, surface rust etc in varying degrees. Does anyone have suggestions as to how & what to refinish it with before it occupies its new workshop /garage for its next 20+ years? What sort of paint? Shelving assembled or in bits? Spray or otherwise? (I have a compressor with spray gun as yet unused). Appreciate any suggestions. Ed

what finish had it got right now? Zinc coated? i'd just DA it off and give it a coat of whatever you have kicking around or you like the colour of.

Hi Al The Dexion shelving is mild steel with flaking /peeling (battle ship) grey paint. I would want to find a paint that is not too fussy about its base, quick drying (so rules out hammerite type paints), and reasonably cheap and easy to apply. Its all possible but there is quite a lot of it (eg 40+ shelving panels) so potentially a lot of effort, and well beyond left over amounts of paint. It is actually fantastic & versatile shelving, can be built like Meccano to produce shelves or with short uprights to produce a workbench. And its strong enough to store just about anything and also be climbed on. I got it in the early 1980's when was working at a Govt office in NW London, they had to clear the basement and so of course I offered to help. I recall it was all transported home in & on my Mk1 Escort. Ed
