posting this up here for other SSS owners to be aware of. i've had a fuel pipe fall apart. it's one of the little ones thats on a SSS carb and conects the float bowl to the jet. i guess the fact it's sat fairly close to the exhaust means it gets pretty harsh treatment and goes from very cool to very hot as well as having to cope with flexing everytime you pull the choke. it was the rear most pipe, makes sence for that one to go first as it gets the heat from the exhaust the most. so deff something any SSS owner should check and replace if needed. rubbish pics but here's the rear carb with missing pipe as it fell apart pretty easy. then the front carb where you can see how the pipe should look. then a picture of the new replacement bit of pipe. 4mm internal fuel pipe and some new fuel clips as well. obviously i will be replacing the front pipe and poss a few other fuel pipes as well.

Worrying. Not the ones you got from me with the engine were they?

nope. this is the original engine fitted to my A10 160J SSS. i belive your old carbs are in Preet's hands now.
i'd guess all the Z cars have this type of carb as well? maybe they have better airflow around the engine and don't suffer the same heat from the exhaust?
we've gotta remember that even though our cars may work well, they are getting pretty old. so fuel lines, brake pipes, and brake fluid, should be checked and/or replaced.
you can't just expect a yearly 45min MOT test to judge how safe your car is.
you need to check it throughly over yourself on a regular basis and/or have someone do it for you.

silly thing is. car was still running fine. i only noticed because when i reversed to park up, i noticed there was some dripping on the floor where i'd been. when i opened the bonnet, i smelt the fuel and could hit a hiss...hiss...hiss... as the petrol was dripping out and hitting the hot exhaust pipe....

worth saying the new pipe has to be very flexable or you will have running issues A set i had after i gave them a nice ultrasonic bath

I have 240z carbs that I'm cleaning up at the moment, first time I have done this so it's a learning curve and interesting how they piece together, I'll be checking that connecting pipe as well.

I'm just thinking now. When I got my SSS it was running ok. After I serviced it I noticed fuel leaking out of these pipes onto the exhaust. Since I've changed them the car has been running quiet bad. Missing a lot. Like its only running on 3 cylinders. I've checked everything else but same issue. It's also giving out black smoke. I didn't use the same piping when replacing the pipes.

It's definitely wrong but do you think that it would make that much of a difference in the running

well it LOOKS like fuel hose. is the hose kinked at all?
i can see that the fuel clamps you are using are too big as they are fully compressed and touching, so the hose may not be on tightly enough. is it leaking? or loose?
there's plenty of other stuff that could be at fault. i'd imagine you've had quite a few bits off the engine when you were cleaning and servicing it.

Nope pipes are tight on with no leaks and no kinks. This problem happened before the engine was taken out but after it was serviced. Checked plugs, leads, cap, distributor, points, condenser. You name it its been checked. Engine runs with a miss fire and when you rev you have some slight black smoke. The car ran perfect before I serviced it. It ran ok for a few hours after the service then the next day ran as it is now . The plan then was to put in YPK original engine in but then Will told me the SSS engine and standard L18 engine is different

well without knowing how the other items have been checked i can't really comment further.
SSS engine apparently has different camshaft and distributor advance curve. maybe higher compression as well. need to find out the problem with the engine before ripping it out.
but if it really is a dud, i wouldn't worry about fitting a non SSS engine and just fitting the twin carbs and cam cover onto it.
