Anyone thought of doing this? Got my hands on a cheap MX5 and either going to repair it or thinking of using the engine in the Sunny.

pretty much. fitted a 2001 1800cc VVT engine and 5 speed manual box to a B210.
nice enough engines and the gearboxes are lovely. the big headache is the fact the MX5 engine has an alloy sump and is rear drop, whereas the Datsuns need a front drop sump. so unless you can cut and weld alloy, or can give it to someone how can the only other option is finding a steel sump to cut and re weld. i'm sure other FWD Mazdas used this engine, such as the 323, so might be worth looking into that?

I wonder if they can just be turned around and the oil pump re positioned

i have done a mk2 1800 into a b310 coupe. not running yet but its is bolted in, take subfram off cut center section out spin it round weld it back togeather. you then only have to cut a very small amount out of the sump and no need to move the oil pick up. i used range rover v8 mounts and made custom mounts to the engine and gearbox. quite a simple job to do if your handy with a welder !

thats why the sump had to get modified so the steering linkage will just fit underneith. dont have to take much out at all. morealess completed swapping the complete struts to s13 bottom arms, hubs, brakes and coilovers. so now has adjustable top mounts, dampening, spring rate, height and also adjustable tension rods, vented and bigger discs ! again not much needs modifying to fit it all when you have access to a lathe and welder

Al's build of the mazdat 120y is on the site. It looks like a factory job and has just the right amount of power for the sunny. Loads of cheap parts and great user forums for mx5s.
