My engine (on Cherry - 1981) makes a whining sound about 3 minutes after starting and if you push the accelerator, the sound gets louder. The engine stops making the noise once I start driving.
It's an annoying sound and even more annoying as I don't know what's causing it. Today I noticed that a decrease in the coolant level having only filled it last week - is this liked to the whining sound?
Is it a head gasket problem?
The car heats up as normal and drives fine.
The oil is not like milkshake and there is no water leaking from the exhaust.
Does anyone know what might be causing this sound? I will be getting a mechanic to check it out but it would be helpful get other people's thoughts on it.
Many thanks in advance.

so many things it could be.
alternator bearings, cambelt idler bearing, thrust release bearing, gearbox bearings, water pump bearing, worn alternator belt...?

Try to determine where the loss of water is occurring, seeing as there is an obvious issue there. If that leads to the water pump then that is an easy and relatively cheap fix. If it is a split/leaking hose then that is even better. Sometimes you can track the noise down quite specifically by poking your head CAREFULLY into the engine bay and listening to determine where the noise is coming from.
I once had an annoying squeaking noise from the engine bay, that like you disappeared on driving, and eventually tracked it down to the points in the distributor - the plastic rider on the cam just needed a blob of grease.
As for fan/pulley belts, I have found that despite the correct tension they can also squeak, until you pick up speed, and I've overcome this by squirting some WD40 on the belt and pulley. Look for the simple/cheap solutions first before calling in your mechanic friend.
