I would be grateful if members of this forum could help identify an early Datsun/Nissan engine. I purchased an old Alfa Romeo that had been imported from Mexico. It had been fitted with a smallish Datsun engine and gearbox. I tried various internet sites to identify the type of engine but without total success. The engine is Mexican built and to me it looks not dissimilar to a BMC (or British Leyland) A series engine. A simple four cylinder OHV petrol design. I have taken a guess at a J13.
Its my understanding that Mexican engines were built for the Mexican Bluebird 510 model - the engine number is M8Y 0E0 228.
I would be grateful for identification of the engine.
Also if anybody would like the engine and gearbox at no cost - but it must be collected from the Somerset/Wiltshire borders - please let me know.

looks BMC B series to me so i'd say your right it's a Nissan J series. easy way to tell is cast iron 5 port head. the "proper" Nissan engines are alloy 8 port head.

Thank you for the suggested engine types. It does in fact have a cast iron head with five ports. I have attached another shot to show the manifold side of the engine.

Some similarities with the R and H engine in the build up, the oil filter upwards mounted, waterpump connections.

Could be a J15 from a South American 620. J engines also fitted to pickups (520/521) or J16 (720 in some lands including early UK models) I would have expected it to have the capacity on it somewhere. I have J engines in 4 of my pickups. Sometimes come across forklifts with J engines in the UK too.
