Hi all
Had an intermittent tick over problem for a while now in my a14, basically it goes through 3 stages, one where it ticks over perfectly without any problems, 2nd it ticks over but tries to stall and splutters at low revs, and 3rd where it will cutout completely in neutral and will only start with accelerater- at low revs it will hop.
Through all 3 stages it runs perfect above about 1250rpm, nothing seems to trigger the crossover between the 3 stages.
The hitachi carb has been stripped down and cleaned out twice. With the intermittency of it i assume its something electrical now
Faulty anti-diesel valve? Any ideas?

when it's up to temp, what is the rpm at idle? what's the emissions say? can you get it to an mot garage so they can put a tester up the exhaust..? i take it the points gap and ignition timing has all been set?
seeing as it's a 1.4, what carb is fitted? factory 1.4? does is have the standard air filter fitted?

when its running right its standard tick over, i don't have a revometer but its not ticking over high.
Its up the test in August, our tester never said anything at the last MOT an it had the problem then, its only done about 1000 miles since as its been stored.
Its electronic ignition, I've cleaned up all the low tension wires but I'm thinking of fitting new ones to be sure, the H/T leads are new (ish).
Its standard hitachi carb that came with the a14, it did have standard air filter but now it has a K&N spherical one.
When it running right its faultless, but it spends about 75% of the time with the fault, its a head scratcher. I can only put it down to the anti-diesel but I'm hopping someone can tell me otherwise?

it did have standard air filter but now it has a K&N spherical one. put the proper filter box back on. what did you do with the extra small bore pipes? if you removed the hot weather idle up valve then that could be the fault... either way, there's no benefit running an after market filter. all you'll do is lose the hot air intake that stops the carb icing up in the winter and you'll lose the cold air induction that it needs for the hot weather....

Extra small bore pipes? I fitted the K&N because this a14 engine came with a 4 branch exhaust so the heat exchange wasn't doing anything, unless theres a way of adapting it? I can't see that being the problem, it can run perfectly for hours then beginning coughing and stalling without any warning, then flip back and be fine again?
