My car is an '83 910 with a 5 speed and it's started whining in 3rd and 5th. The fact it's only 3rd and 5th makes me think it's definitely the box rather than diff.
Any suggestions from experience before I freak out and start looking for a new gearbox?
Will change the oil this weekend in both the box and the diff.

I know its a bodge, but a trickle of Molyslip, Wynns etc may help. And make sure its GL4 in the gearbox. The diff on mine was a little whiny even at just 40,000 miles, but I have long forgotten about it now after an oil change & some additive. So much so that maybe its time to drop my diff oil again after 4 years.
