Apologies I do not own a Datsun or Nissan B U T my Beauford wedding car is fitted with a 280C L28 engine. It has recently started to show the following symptoms so am seeking advice about possible causes. On start up the exhaust emits black smoke and deposits black soot from tailpipe; Once warm the engine runs smoothly, it idles sweetly at 850rpm.However there is a strong smell of petrol. Once the car is running it misfires in 3rd 4th and 5th gear not continuously but now and again. I have had the plugs out and replaced them with new . The worn plugs were all black and 2 were wet and oily? This helped for a few miles but the same probs returned. Being a bit of a pessimist - am I looking at an engine rebuild or could it be simpler than that. My regular mechanic is taking a look tomorrow so I may be able to post more. However as he is not familiar with this engine I would appreciate any tips or suggestions from this forum about what could be wrong . As you can tell I am not a mechanic. I have driven this engine for 4 years done about 12000 miles had it serviced 3 times and it has been relatively problem free.

First off SWEET CAR!! Me and my brother have been toying with the idea off fitting our L28T into a Ford Falcon ( normally fitted with straight sixes over here) for many years,, but we are to scared. A good start would be to run a compression test to see if all cylinders are working. Is it SU carbs? maybe just need adjustment or floats are starting to sink, I personally hate SU carbs but when they are working correctly they are dependable,, when they are worn out, they will drive you to drinking,, but i digress.
