Hi all.
On the subject of lowering. I've got a plan for my rear leaf springs. I'm going to have them straightened to lower it about 30mm. In addition fit them with powerflex bushes as the original ones are cracking fairly badly. However I would also need to lower the front to match. Now I hate it when people chop coil spring down so I'm not going down that route. But I can't find any specific lowering springs to buy. So... What is the best solution? Does anyone know of any springs from another Datsun that fit as well as lower? Retempering maybe? Coil overs? If so, any recommendations?

Front--make your own coilovers or yuou can buy King Springs from Australia. They cover 120Y's and have a UK distributor as well AFAIK

Does anyone know if the shocker oil is still available? I've saved the old oil but may benefit from renewing. I rebuilt an old Peugeot 304 and used jack oil. Seemed to work well.
Any experiences anyone?

Jack oil, king springs, micra drop links and poly bushes all round transformed it. Would recommend!
Back end - I've had brand new leaf springs made 30mm lower with poly bushes. Not tried it yet but I hope it'll work as good as the front.

Well... that seems to have taken over two years to achieve . A bit like my (ongoing) kitchen extension. Anyway, well done.

Haha! No it was all done about 18 months ago. Just thought I'd give some feedback, in case anyone else wanted to upgrade their suspension.
Good luck with the kitchen though!!😄

Any experiences anyone? Yes indeed. Albeit I know that he question /thread is 2 years old. I set out to replace the strut inserts on my 910 estate and found them to be wet struts ie with no inserts to be replaced. I removed the tops of the struts and drained the mucky old oil (point of no return) and refilled with medium grade motorbike fork oil. Pumped /worked the strut piston a few times to expel air and excess fluid and reassembled and refitted - all is well 2 years later and car handles very much better. There are also (shock absorber) companies who would likely rebuild the struts if need be. As far as coil springs are concerned, there are companies in UK that still make springs but I have not used (yet), but son had springs made for his Viva. Leaf springs can be lowered using lowering blocks, although I suspect that could destabilise the axle if not very careful. An old trick I have heard of was to dismantle the multi leaf springs and to turn over one of the leaves ie so as to flatten the spring - but I expect that is much easier said than done. If you are going much further with modifying your car it will be well worth contacting Phil Morton who rallies an old Datsun (he also features on TV Car SOS I think), and who I believe has used RatDat for advice and parts in the past. Hi Ed. Cheers for reply! Regarding the leaf springs.. I toyed with using lowering blocks but as you said, it can be a bit iffy being stable. So I used a company in rotheram. They took my originals and made new units 30mm lower. After that I had them powder coated. It cost £300 in total and is also safer than blocks! I've not fit them yet as I'm still doing mammoth welding in the arches. The place I used were mentioned on SOS so it's a good seal of approval!
One day it'll be ready! One day!!
Cheers for the info Ed!!

Dave, did you manage to put the L14 Vanette engine in the 120Y?

I ended up buying an A14 instead. New rings, reground crank with new shells. Skim and gas flowed the head and fit an old janspeed manifold and stainless exhaust. It's bedded in now so I should be able to push it more this year.
