My 1985 Laurel C32 starting missfiring yesterday. It idles lumpy and missfires on acceleration. The car isn't very nice to drive. This the third Laurel C32 I've owned and they've all suffered with this issue. The first was fixed by a garage (no idea what they did). The second one cleared on it's own. Does any have any ideas what could cause this?

Well now; This sounds just the same as my 160J. I changed the points, condensor, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and fiddled with the only 2 adjustments you can make to the carbs. Had the carbs stripped down; called in a mobile classic mechanic..... and all to no avail. This was over a period of about 7 months! Decided to take it down to Will Datman in E. Sussex. he clipped on the timing light to check and noticed that the light wasn't flickering regularly through all of the leads and, thus, diagnosed a faulty coil (all within about 5 minutes...) Dammit! Then he set about re-setting the carb settings that the mobile mechanic had all but FUBAR'd! My only excuse was that I didn't have a timing light to have checked what was obviously the cause.
Thus, let me say......... TRY ANOTHER COIL FIRST!!!!!!

The car is with a local garage. So far they are unable to find the cause.

Did you try another coil? Your profile doesn't say where you are but are you able to get to Will(DATMAN)in East Sussex?

I am based in Thurrock Essex. The mechanic has ruled out the coil and recons it's the fuel injection system with cylinder number 2 being the issue and is in the process of taking it all apart. He's still got the car. Bit frustrating but I said I'd give him some more time........

Blimey! You're just down the road from me. We should meet up some time. You're about 45 minutes from DATMAN. If you fancy a drive down there anytime, give me a bell and I'll join you (No. at top of page).

Latest news, it's an electrical fault between the ECU and one injector. Now it's a matter of tracing the wiring......

Car is now sorted. Turned out to be the dropper resistor which sends current to the injectors. Had to get a new one from Nissan.

Sorted! Isn't it great when the car runs sweet again? Amazing how these Datsuns/Nissans keep going when something like this is wrong. They do soak up some abuse when other makes would probably give up. I ran mine with the timing wrong, the fuel mixture out and the aforementioned dodgey coil.

Thanks, looking forward to giving it a good run at the weekend. Will hopefully get to a few shows this year, work permitting.

Wish you'd phoned me I could have saved you a lot of time and told you it would probably be the resistor pack. They tend to corrode. S13s suffer from it as well. You can sometimes repair them.
