Hi Dawson lovers. I have a 1979 160J mk3 sss. Reg.fvx343t. I'm planning a full resto on it but would like to add performance parts wherever I can whilst still staying as true to it's roots as possible. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions for engine, brake and suspension mods or know of any part suppliers? I'm in contact with Will at datman but he has no mod parts. Also does anyone know anything about fitting turbos to 160J Motors? Any help would be much appreciated so I can return it to the road where it belongs. Cheers Mikey

Who's Dawson? lol Welcome to the club. I do all my shopping in Japan, but then I wanted my restoration to be built as if it was being rebuilt in Japan.
Turbo won't be " staying as true to it's roots" in my eyes. A10 with an L18 I presume? If so, start with intake, exhaust, cam, fuel and see how you feel.
Suspension can be made up out of other parts if you don't want to import stuff. GAZ new if you've got the budget. When changing the front suspension, that'll allow for the brake upgrade. I've got AE86 shocks and brakes on the front of my 510.
Pictures!

Dawson!! Lol. Should read back before posting. Thanks for advice guys. When I said 'true to root's, I just meant sticking with the original engine rather than trying to shoehorn something bigger in there as I had considered using a chevvy small block that I have. I will post some pics ASAP.

I will post some pics ASAP. Please keep the small block miles away from the nimble Datsun!! If you want to retain the original engine, then some headowrk, twin DCOE carbs, decent exhaust will see some modest power gains but gain you lots of super cool points :-) 1.8 CA18 and 2.0 SR20 turbo lumps also drop into the Violet with minor mods. So it's an option but you will need a beefier rear axle for sure. Upside is that 180+BHP in that car is tons of fun!

A few guys using AE86 front cross members to have rack/pinion in the 510. When I see mine again I'll try get some part numbers, not seen it in about 6 months.

I like the idea of using a sr20det. Did some research and there's plenty about with a great list of mods available. Could I use a 2000sx axle? I'm used to working with bikes so quite new to car engine swaps. I do love a challenge though. Would I be better off buying a doner car?

The SR20DET works well on these and does not require a lot of work on the mounts AFAIK. Gearbox tunnel needs some massaging. Axle wise, your car is live axled and 200Sx ar independent so not a straight swap. You need to be looking at live axles--ford atlas, scimitar, some toyota's, later Nissans as well. The decider is the power you run as most of the above can't take excess of 250bhp! Have fun..
