My 120y has NGK BPR5ES plugs fitted as standard. I wondered if anyone has tried using a better modern performance plug and had good results. Maybe an iridium or platinum equivalent. Ta!

Interested to hear about this (as my Bluebird uses same plugs). What is wrong with these NGK plugs in your car at the moment? Have you trawled the spark plug manufacturer websites? Are latest plug types better or just longer life? Or would it be just like a new set of plugs that always feels a little better than before? I used to get my NGK's from Unipart until they closed - came in Unipart boxes for about £1 each so I changed them frequently. Ed

Trying to iron out a flat spot but just making the most of 21st century technology really. Iridium for instance have a more concentrated spark. Would like to know if it makes any difference.

I fitted a Spitfire Multi-spark HT lead some years ago to my Datsun and have since ported it over to subsequent Datsuns. It does seem to improve the idling and works smoothly across the range of revs. Despite what some people are saying about it's "cheap, simple" construction I have found it to work well. Remember that "Cheap and simple" also applies to Japanese points and condensor and these work extremely well on our Datsuns!

Yeah, points and condenser dies work well but id always keep spares in the boot! Dwell angle always suffers though on acceleration I find. Transistor switching is more accurate.
I'm saying all this... The car hasn't been driven for. 18 months! 😄

My old Bluebird is still running old points etc, but the distributor is still in good nick. However I now recall that early on I did suffer a flat spot whatever I did - resolved by adjusting the Nikki carb accelerator jet pump to its max setting. That was a bit fiddly to sort - a rod with 3 holes that was by default on middle. So long ago I had forgotten all about it. Ed

Yes, mine has got two holes but its already on the main one. Ive managed to sort the flat spot 80% though. I've the carb float height 1mm higher than the centre dot on the carb window. something so simple!
