Hi. I have recently imported a Datsun 1200 Deluxe 1973 5 door from South Africa which my grandad owned and dad owned. I want to restore it so that I can keep it and treasure it with all the family history BUT i just wondered has anyone restored a 1200 deluxe 1973 before? I need to put new engine it first but didn't know whether to keep it the same or go up to 1400 or 1500 if it can fit? Or maybe someone can advise another? I have no idea what to do and want to do it once. Help please? Also any ideas on where to find other parts for this model? Where to go online?? thank you

I have a 2dr version of this model. I think the 1.2-litre engine suits it well, it's a very light car.
Why does it need a new engine?
The 1.4 and 1.5 would make sense if you were going to fit a 5-speed gearbox, but unless you're lucky they are expensive to buy.
I think there are specialists in Japan and Australia, I had to get a gearlever gaiter from one of them. Otherwise I just see what's on eBay.
Good luck with it.

Hello "meneer" and welcome.
I too suggest that you keep the A12 engine ... perhaps move up to A14 if you can find one in good condition but definitely not the A15. However this would also mean different wiring layout for the alternator, distributor, etc.
Drop me a line if I can heelp in any way ... despite the distance!
