I've just seen the Ad for the new Landrover Discovery that features.......
"Intelligent seat folding" WTF!
Apparently,we are now getting even lazier to the point where we need electric motors to put the rear seats down and up!
My partner has recently bought a Nissan Quashqai (According to Classic Car Weekly this is a future classic....) and it is a great "today" car. But,being the top of the range model, it comes with all manner of gadgets that beep,wheeze and fart every time you start the car until you then have to turn them off to stop the annoyance.
If you drive past a hedge...it beeps ('cos you need to know that you are 3 feet away from it... TOO CLOSE!!!!)
If you drive over the white lane line...it beeps ('Cos... well...just 'cos!)
If you stop at a juction for more than about 2 seconds....the engine cuts out ('Cos it needs to stop pumping emmissions...really? Forget about the carbon footprint of producing another starter motor to replace your worn-out-before-time one!)
If you get within 100yds of another car in front when doing 30MPH, guess what?.....it beeps.
It beeps if you open the door.
It beeps if you leave a light on.
It beeps if you open the boot hatch with the key left inside the car.
IT WON'T STOP BL---Y BEEPING!
Now, some of you will say that back in the 60/70s Nissan/Datsun led the way with gadgets such as.... a cigar lighter, heated rear window, radio, tinted glass but now the car industry is justgetting silly with all of these unnecessary gadgets that will cost a fortune to replace/repair when they go wrong.
When the airbags (side,front,top and under your A--e) go off on a modern car the relatively new car will get written off due to the cost of replacement (Friend's Fiat 500..... £3500-00 for the airbags on a 3 year old car!) So, the insurance premiums go up for us all to pay for this. Oh yes.
Apparently, it's about 15 years use for a modern car to offset its carbon footprint for production (correct me if I'm slightly wrong here).
Give me a Datsun/Nissan classic with its mechanical tilt/slide seat lever and poke the Discovery's "intelligent seat folding" where the sun doesn't shine!
I'm off to the shops in the Qashqai... if only I can stop it beeping!
PS Any ideas of the most useless gadget OR the next one to be invented?

Hi Leigh...I feel your pain (although my cars are too old to have these gadgets anyway).
As for annoying sounds made by the car...I find that having my wife travel with me as a passenger is the perfect solution. I never hear anything from the car...and we don't argue (I don't like to interrupt).
Just a thought...

i cant really comment my cars range from 1971 to 2016 (2016 model even parks it's self lol). but for every day i like a modern car, keeps the classics safe  |

....BUT, do you use the self-park feature? My friend had it but only used it once to see what happened, and the never used it again. He found it "Quite frightening".Leigh (Area rep)[/font][/font][/font] |

I use it from time to time, more to ensure it's still working and to freak people out lol
