Hi...it's been a while since I've been on here, but I'm carrying out some maintenance on my N10 Cherry 1.3 New timing belt, full service and cooling system fettling. The fan switch stopped working a couple of years ago and I've had the fan wired up to a switch whilst searching for a new part. I've now got one but the original switch is seized into the alloy housing and I think it will break if I try any harder. I'm also fitting a new thermostat and the 3 bolts were seized and felt like they would snap. Managed to free them with boiling water, penetrating oil and patience. Eventually they all came out.
I'm cautious about ther fan switch though because the odds of obtaining a new housing are zero if I break it...any thoughts?

Hi,Chris. There's no easy answer to this other than what you did previously with the thermostat housing. I had this problem with the speedo sensor "welded" into the clutch housing. My local classic garage wouldn't even attempt to get it out. An elderly experienced friend of mine suggested that I use a blowtorch on wide setting to gently heat the aluminium around the sensor to free it up, gradually increasing the heating time and working it loose by tightening it up firstly and then undoing it. As it happens, I managed to sell the car on before doing this. As the fan is currently working by the manual switch, I would wait until you find a replacement before trying anything that could render the car unuseable. Good luck,mate!

if you have the housing off, soak it a little diesel for while then clean it down. Get a small cooking burner (type usually used on top of brulee) then heat the housing.
This should help it free off
the burner i use i got from Dunelm

With the new thermostat fitted the temperature seems to hold bang-on in the middle of the gauge no-matter what...so I suspect that the old unit wasn't opening fully when hot. I'm reluctant to risk breaking an irreplaceable housing, so will carefully watch the gauge in traffic.

Does your cherry have a E series or A series engine? If it does i would check the coolant for oil residue, and maybe flush it out.
I have a n12 E13 26k miles and it was really bad and i tried everything to clean it out. Finally i resulted in using diet cola (yes your reading right) i filled up the system rant it up to temp with cap off then left it for a week, drained system then repeated. after i flushed with cold water both directions and split the system into 3 parts, Rad, engine block and heater matrix. once nice and clean connected it all back up and filed with coolant. i'm not had an issue since i did this. Also check the cooling fan is kicking in and once car is at temp, change the heater from hot to cold to see if it changes as sometimes the bit gets clocked up.
