hi all.
My name is Ron and i live in mid Devon. i have a87 Nissan Sunny 1.6 auto with 22k on the clock. It has sat around untouch in a garage for 13yrs.
took it for an mot and it only passed.
But i have a fueling issue. I have replaced the filter but still the same.
so my question. Does it have a fuel pump?? (assume it does) and where is it hiding?? Is it manual or electric on this old beastie.
Many thanks. Ron

Asuming your car has a carb it has a manual fuel pump attached to cylinder block under intake manifold.

I have a sunny 1988 1.6 carb, not had this issue though. Does the problem start only when the car is warm, ie auto choke off. Could it be the float sticking, does the carb sight glass look 1/2 full (as it should) What are the fueling problem symptoms? does it cut out when accelerating.

13 year old fuel? You don't actually describe the fault....

Hi again
So I have drained all the old fuel. Replaced the plugs leads coil ect Runs much better but still seems to run out of fuel.
Starts up drives off and it keeps happening. Starter has now packed up I think. Does an auto have an inhibitor.
Thanks

How far does it drive before it stalls/stops? How do you get it going again? An auto 'box will have an inhibitor switch fitted to prevent starting when in gear; why do you ask?

It lasts less than a mile at times. Then I pop it in neutral start her up and off she goes again and continues in this fashion. Where is the inhibitor on an auto.
Once started it runs for all random times then again does the same
Any help would be great Thanks
Ron

Hi, Ron. I presume that you are guessing that the inhibitor switch is operating incorrectly and causing the car to cut out. It is unlikely but could be the cause. Quite dangerous, potentially. If you start the car and then rev it in neutral whilst stationary, does it do the same after about a minute? If not then it could be the inhibitor switch. Try wiggling the gear selector and see if that causes the car to stall. Not sure if it is activated by the gear selector rod but it will be situated on the side of the gearbox with an electrical connection to indicate when the car is in gear or not. Have a look in a workshop manual if you have or can get one. You may also find help on You Tube. From my experience with other autos, the switches are fairly cheap and easy to replace.

Thanks for the reply Leigh.
So I have found a few thing out. So I replaced the leads coil ect found the spring loaded bit in the centre of the dizzy cap stuck. Freed this off as I had been supplied the incorrect item and the motor factor only lists the incorrect one. I took the car for a spin and it still cuts out. It seems like the carb is empty as looked at the glass on the side of the carb and it seemed empty. Turned he over and she will fire up.
Then it just stopped turning over. Suspect starter or inhibitor switch. Hence I was asking. I took the starter out. Looked ok popes it back in and it fired up. This only happens twice. Again she will not turn over.
Any thoughts this far lol. Thanks

It looks like the float in the carb is sticking (not surprisingly) and may just need a clean. To be honest, I had mine overhauled by a classic garage whereby they stripped it down and replaced various bits with a second hand one I had. Worth it as that car had sat around like yours for years. Now works fine. The non-starting issue can raise it's head this time of year due to the battery. They just go downhill very quickly. Get the car to a motor factors and get them to test it. Also, clean the HT lead connectors to the starter motor.

Hi Ron. If you`re cleaning out the float needle in the carb, maybe take the time to blow through the fuel lines. It is possible the tank has a little bit of rust in it that has been picked up and lodged in the carb.
