I have always understood (from Will and in manuals) that the valve /cam clearances have to be checked and adjusted with the engine really hot (& set @ 10 thou" inlet or 12 thou" exhaust). This is no mean task when it takes me a few minutes to remove the air cleaner, cam cover etc etc by which time the engine has cooled a bit. I would guess that this applies also to the equivalent 6 cylinder engines. However I spoke today with a well respected expert (from North Yorks & who deals with 240Z's etc....) and who advised that the clearances can be set cold at 8 thou" (inlet) & 10 thou" (exhaust) just as well. Any further wisdom on this? Ed

Any further wisdom on this? Ed He owns a "farm" and having built a few rally 240's he probably knows a thing or two about the L series engine... ;D I would suggest ..Listen to his wise words.

setting cold is fine for first startup after a rebuild but I always reset them hot. It takes around 30 seconds to throw the HT leads out of the way and whizz off the covers.
