Engine oil recommendations for a classic a-series engined datsun please!

Good question - gearbox and engine oils I presume? I am no expert, but our old engines probably originally ran on 20/50 mineral oil. Modern oils may be too thin for them, and I am not sure what the effect of "synthetic" oils or modern additives have on old engines. Modern oils are probably much higher spec and better than the old oils were, but are they better for our old engines? And to add to confusion the Castrol, Comma & even Millers oil guides dont go far enough back for many of us. I even went to my friendly Nissan dealer for advice - sadly they knew even less. Personally I now use a modern mineral or semi synthetic 15/40 oil in my L18 engine - having moved to that from 10/40. And I change it at least every 3000 miles. In the gearbox I use a modern multigrade 75/90 but GL-4 oil - beware of GL-5 oils that may (I believe) be too slippy for our old synchro cones. Ed

you have to remember that oils have moved on a lot in the last 25years
i just stick in a decent brand rather then the normal cheap motor factor stuff.
GL4 is for gearboxes and GL5 is for axles. i belive there are additives in GL5 which will break down and wear out the brass parts of a gearbox

Synthetic oils are made up more of different blends and have alot of cleaning agents in them which old engines where not designed for and just dont like ... Semi and fully synthetic oils tend to be thinner to enable the oil to get into the tighter tolerances of the newer engines.

What do others think? i agree with the grade /viscosity bit (and maybe even thicker oil is needed as our engines get looser). Problem (I think) is - that if this is so then it is quite hard to get decent quality oil that is not part synthetic. And we havent even started on anti freeze and brake fluid yet (I think at least those 2 are easier - blue and DOT4)). Come on out Will....! Ed
