A lady friend of mine took her Ka for it's MOT and 'phoned me up in a panic as it had failed. "OMG" she said "Listen to this". She read me back the fail sheet as follows; Front offside headlamp not working Front offside headlamp aim not tested Rear fog-light not working Front offside tyre showing bulge where rubber has separated from fabric Front offside inner ball joint showing excessive play. After calming her down she told me that the garage would do all the jobs "for around £300 (three hundred pounds) but did I know anyone who could do it for less? I directed her to the local second hand/new tyre shop across the road from her to sort out the tyre. Then I told her to go to Halfords to get the headlamp bulb sorted for £8 + parts, if she couldn't do this herself, and I put her in touch with a young lad who does mobile jobs to earn a bit extra who quoted her £30-00 to do the ball joint, bulb and fog-light (possibly another bulb issue...?) Well, as it happens, she 'phoned me back later to say that she took the car over the road to the tyre place and they did all the jobs (the fog light was a fault, not the bulb) for £65-00. Not sure if the garage is in the "Good Garage Scheme" but if so I might feel inclined to send an e-mail to the powers that be about "Lone female owners being taken for a ride". I mean, come on, £300-00? It might be a good idea to start a thread somewhere to put the good garages that repair, rebuild, paint, weld etc. that we have come across. I wonder how many other ladies this garage has scared into paying exorbitant fees? Oh, yes, the car was retested today and passed.... Leigh (Area rep)

In fairness she should look at her car more often or get someone else to if she had been driving around with a lethal tyre and lights not working etc!
