I'd be much happier if you could see the much greater influence of the fine engineers and designers of the Prince Motor Co. behind it, and you could link it back to their fine work in troubled times at companies like Nakajima Hikoki and Tachikawa. Me too!!! But the cars that tell that story never made it to the UK in any quantity. Don't get me wrong - I don't buy into the Japanese as copyists argument either. Influence goes both ways. What I love about my Cherry is it's Datsun-ness. True. Sorry! Interesting stuff though.

Saw a picture some time ago of an Escort rear axle/Datsun rear axle and they looked quite similar, could be twins.

this photo. ignore the brackets as they were added for a Caterham. if it wasn't for the fact that an Escort axle is much longer than the Datsun axle it could be bolted in with minimum effort using the original prop, handbrake cable etc. (although i fitted a larger diff flange when i had a new bigger 'U' jointed prop made) this shortened Ford LSD axle really tranformed the Mazdat. it's going to be a fantastic car in 2013. i'll miss it but it had to go
