Datsun UK figures: A10 23,690 (A14 engine 4dr) PA10 14,142 (L16 engine 4dr) KPA10 8,394 (L16T engine SSS coupe) Misc LHD 75 Total 46,301 Interesting to compare that figure with 114,682 for Sunny B310 and 45,096 for 810. I think the Sunny sold well as it was a more obvious competitor to the Escort, but it seems buyers were split down the middle between Violet and Bluebird when it came to something competing against the Cortina. A few photos: 1979-80 Datsun 160J SSS (A10) x2 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Turquoise one bought off Will, blue one a rusty shed picked-up for £35 for spares. 1980 Datsun 160J SSS (A10) 2 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1980 Datsun 160J SSS (A10) by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr It's probably through using it in weather like this that it eventually rusted away with its subsequent owner in Guernsey, though I believe the Enkei wheels live on with Preet! I did well over 40k miles in it during my 2+ years of ownership, it remains one of my favourite Datsuns. 1978 Datsun 160J SSS (A10), London 1994 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Tatty early model seen in Chiswick which didn't make it beyond 1995. 1981 Datsun Violet SSS (A10) + 1977 260C (330), 1999 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr And for completeness, one of the very few facelift SSS's I've seen. 1979 Datsun 140J (A10) 2006 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1980 Datsun Violet 140J (A10) 2006 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1979 Datsun Violet 160J SSS (A10), 2006 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr A selection which were at CARS at Santa Pod in July 2006. Apparently it came here in 1987 and had an L20B engine, but it's RHD - wonder which market it came from? I don't have anything scanned-in right now on the 2dr saloon or estate, which we didn't get in the UK or Europe. I saw one of the latter in Thetford years ago, probably off one of the nearby USAF bases.

My mum had a blue coupe it was X reg and had the square headlights, I think the rear ones where different from those in pics above too. It was the first car i drove in the late 80s and was a rare car even then. It was tatty but cool and fast I thought.
When we trading it in we got £100 I remember they guy said it would have been £300 if it was the SSS as he pointed to his price book. But now I guess that it must have been the SSS, but just said 160J on the back.
I like cheap cars but would give proper money for one of these now

This is the back of that rough one I saw: 1981 Datsun Violet SSS (A10) 1999 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr You can't remember the full registration can you?

At what point did they change from twin-headlights to single square lamps? Also the bumpers changed and I can see a vent in the C-pillar? I suppose it was just changing styles/taste but I do like the round headlights and the plastic bumper over-riders.

I think the second facelift took place around late 1979/early 1980. I too favour the round headlight but updated model, with bigger bumpers, revised interior and open steel wheels.

LIFTED FROM WIKIPEDIA (6 MARCH/13)
Motorsports
The Violet 160J was Nissan's most successful car in the World Rally Championship. It won the Safari Rally in Kenya from 1979 to 1982 consecutively, all with Shekhar Mehta behind the wheel. The 1979 and 1980 winners were powered by an SOHC engine; the 1981 and 1982 winners were Violet GT models with a DOHC engine. These Safari records are only matched by the Toyota Celica GT-Four which won the 1992–95 events. Driven by Timo Salonen, the Violet also won the 1980 Rally New Zealand and the 1981 Rallye Côte d'Ivoire.

This hurts a lot. My father bought this 1979 160J brand new. After about 5-6 years he sold it to me. I recently came across this photo and tonight came across this site.
It was easily the best car I owned - easily out performing similar Cortinas in both comfort and specification. The day after I put two brand new tyres on it an elderly driver drove straight into the back of it at about 30 mph, writing it off. The force of the impact threw me backwards breaking the drivers seat.
As you can see, it has "Period" Hella spots and a black painted grille.
Still looks good, doesn't it?
I've still got the Haynes manual!!!

Sadly "Written off" is beyond economic repair. It was a saloon model, but the force of the impact twisted the chassis. The boot was level with the rear seats. That was about 1987. Corrosion was a real issue- but that was also true of European models - with the body's rotting long before the mechanicals let go.

I'd be interested to know the full registration of this car, nothing sinister but I keep a list of all surviving cars I come across plus those known to be scrapped. If you like you can send me a message through the 'PM' facility.
