Being toying around with ideas of sound quality. On previous projects I always went for 6x9 rear parcel shelf speakers. To be honest the amount of work that goes into these speakers, cutting the metal shelf then the cardboard shelf along with the amp wiring is a lot of time and effort and the result is good but not great. So on this car I did the opposite. I wanted speakers for quality sound and bass from a woofer. With this in mind I had to by a league of speakers which are well known for quality especially on being 3/4. Now I'm no person that drives down the road with the windows open and the car thumping away but I do like quality sound whereby I enjoy the 80's music whilst driving my Datsun.
So I chose Hertz speakers which I have to advise that if your keeping the original whole then these are amazing. I also kept the original shelf on top showing originality. I must say this decision was perfect and the sound quality is shocking.

I also need to put some noise into my white A10 today but will try to do it stealth. Where did you actually put the speakers? I like those Pioneer back shelf speakers with enclosure they do so you dont have to cut the shelf

The Hertz speakers went straight into the original whole. Just has to drill new wholes. Then the shelf fits nicely on top.

Can't beat a proper sub box for decent bass. I would have one in my T72 but I need to space. I currently have some half decent 6x9's but they just don't cut it....

The best thing to do with an old car is to make a shelf slab ©Andrew Eve
This is a piece of MDF cut and placed under the metal back shelf or on top and covered in fabric, two decent 6x9s an Amp and a bluetooth streaming module, simply needs a switched live feed and the amp being bolted underneath means you wouldn't see the thing and the car is still 99% original, no silly holes in the doors, cheap gaiters and drilling in the A pillar.

Yea but for bass in these old cars 6x9's don't cut it. Like Al said u can't beat a sub box. I have done the 6x9 speakers with amps twice but the way I've done it now far better. Problem with the MDF way is you still need the actual speaker to go in to the boot through the metal shelf for maximum performance. So you would still need to cut the metal shelf. If the speaker didn't actually go through the shelf and into the boot but stayed on top like on MDF then the sound would just be tinny . Bolting MDF from under the metal shelf is tricky because you have the metal bars that move when opening and closing the boot.

So with almost everything sorted I have booked her in for MOT tomorrow. Before MOT it's a quick visit to a friends garage for new gearbox oil, new brake calliper and brake pads.

Excellent news on the MoT front!
All your ICE talk is above me I'm afraid, I don't even have a mono radio in my B110!
