He has phoned up to chat about parts etc. Sounded like he wanted to do a proper full resto. No disrespect to new owner or the car, but is he mad wanting to do a full restoration on this? Surely he could have doubled his budget, bought a much nicer example when one becomes available and then do a easy restore? From what Al has highlighted , this car needs a lot of work. So we are looking at a build cost including paint and parts ( if available) of £5k easy , more like £8k if you farm out the welding, fabrication, bodywork..and this is not counting the hundreds of hours the owner has to put in. But hats off if the car is destined for a full restoration, certainly proved my ideology wrong

Depending on his budget, everything is for sale ...there are on or two I know where if the buyer is serious and willing to pay upper quartile prices, cars can be sold what is "upper quartile" ? I would say £3k < > £5k for a very clean rust free example that may have been restored/mildly modified. Show quality or concours cars are > £5k the buyer is a trader/garage so will be doing all the work, plus was planning on mods. Like I said, full credit to the chap for taking on the challenge. I would have waited for a better example to start with but thats just me. This goes back to the famous saying...opinions are like arses, we all got one. plus people seem reluctant to spend any more then they have too.... Yes lots of dreamers out there who want top quality cars for rock bottom prices this car was MOT'd but sold for only a 3rd of the price of a recent 810 SSS that needed similar work and was not on the road. I put that down to market economics and desirability....Supply Vs demand. The blue 510SSS that was a complete basket case sold for £2.5k as well did you tell Ricky he was Mad? I do all the time

I applaud you for your devotion. Cost/insanity shouldn't be the deciding factor for everyone. You are obviously not alone as there are many tales of amounts of money being spent to restore a car that exceed market value. It can't always be a financial issue because some people, perhaps like yourself, view this cost as being a valid part of their "hobby". My best friend (also a Classic Car Nut) once told me... " There are people out there who smoke and drink their money away (as a form of hobby, perhaps?) and have nothing to show for it, at the end of the day. You will have your car to show, enduring fun and, bar any accidents, no ill-health issues". You can argue that, but I make him right. Well done Autoimagination (your name probably says it all, and yes, I too have an A10 - not for sale)

Welcome I can't see this project costing much if you own our own body shop. You have a massive advantage and a big head start, unlike me and Many others on here we don't have this advantage but learn as we go along. Personally my view is simple it doesn't matter about money. It's all about your personal taste and devotion to how much you want it and love it, usually a good recipe for the wife to be nagging at you. Good luck with the project and keep the thread updated with the highs and lows.

i have a similar headliner problem.. same car ..same colour. snap. Both Al and I had a case of the droops (I,m talking about the headliner) that we sorted by removing the original liner and backboard through the hatchback. IIRC Al scrubbed off the foam backing and then stuck the original back onto the board. I chose to replace the lining with a new perforated white lining. I used High Temperature spray glue (from Fleabay)and a lot of patience to get it looking good.
